Sleep Soundly Abaco – Phase II
In November of 2020, as part of our Sleep Soundly Treasure Cay initiative, ninety bed frames and mattresses, along with pillows, sheets, and blankets, were distributed in Treasure Cay and the surrounding communities. We feel that beds are a basic need that it is important to fulfill to help the people of Abaco rebuild their lives. The recipients have been extremely grateful, and since then we have been inundated with requests for beds in Abaco. Many families have been sleeping on the floor since Hurricane Dorian, and we have learned that a large number of Bahamians are returning to Abaco from Nassau, and are in dire need of basic furnishings, especially mattresses and bed frames.
In order to build on the success of Sleep Soundly Treasure Cay, we are launching Sleep Soundly Abaco to extend the reach of this program. With the support of Linda Mackey, Consul-General of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas in Miami, we have partnered with City Furniture who has contributed 200 queen size mattresses. We have also received a grant from The Rotary Clubs of The Bahamas and the Lyford Cay Foundation which will help to cover the bed frames and an additional 32 twin size mattresses, sheets pillows, and blankets, as well as shipping.
We have received requests from residents in, and will be distributing beds to: Treasure Cay, Crown Haven, Grand Cay, Green Turtle Cay, Spring City, Murphy Town, Blackwood, Fire Road, Marsh Harbour, Central Pines, Dundastown, Sandy Point, Cooperstown and Moores Island.
