Community Garden and Backyard Farming
Food security continues to be a critical since Hurricane Dorian struck in 2019, and Abaco meets the criteria to be defined as a food desert with limited access to fresh, nutrient dense food. Abaco Strong is supporting food sustainability through our Backyard Farmers Program by providing topsoil, fertilizer, seeds and pots. Our Backyard Farmers are growing vegetables, fruit trees and other native plants to provide nutritious food for themselves and their families. Hydroponic and Aquaponic Gardening Systems offer sustainable, replicable, and resilient solutions to the current climate. Abaco Strong will be constructing an aquaponic community garden in Treasure Cay that will act as a demonstration garden while providing organically grown vegetables for participating community members. The aquaponic system includes a 410 Gallon Fish Tank, and 34-Food Contact Safe Aquaponics Grow Rafts with 1600 plant locations. We are excited to get this project off the ground as Treasure Cay leads the way for self sustaining agriculture in Abaco.
